My son turned 6 years old today. His birthdays can be depressing and the Being A Paraprofessional Is Easy It’s Like Riding A Bike Shirt. We do not buy him gifts that he wants, there really isn’t anything. We have tried over the years, buying him some toy that we think he might play with or something I want to use in programming. This year I bought him some books from a used book store, number books. I didn’t wrap them up or present them with any fanfare. Just bought them a few days before his birthday and handed them to him in the car to look at on the way home from school.

He doesn’t seem to have any clue that this day is special or that on this special day one usually gets cake and gifts. It’s Sunday, we took him to church for the second Sunday in a row since they started a special needs ministry and have a room set up for him and trained staff to spend time with him. After church we took him to the only restaurant we have ever taken him to, Burger King.

He gets hamburger and the lettuce without the bun, all the fries he can eat and some diluted soda. We were going to take him to a park to play on the playground, jungle gym, swings, slides etc, but it looked like rain and a strong cold wind was blowing. With his birthday come unbidden thoughts of the future. These thoughts flit into my mind and I allow them to dwell there for a short time.
